Iceland - Isafjordur

Isafjordur is a tender port.  The tender to shore took about 15 minutes to get to shore, but be warned it can be very rocky sitting in the little boat waiting for everyone to board before you depart.  I was very relieved to reach dry land after this short trip and felt somewhat motion sick.

Unfortunately for me, we had booked a shore excursion to Vigur Island.  Which meant once we had disembarked the tender, we walked a few meters and boarded another boat.  That was pretty much the last thing I felt like doing right then!

Shore Excursion - Vigur Island

It's a 35 minute boat ride to the Island, where we then spent about 2 hours.

The first stop on the tour of this little Island is at the windmill where we saw Puffins sitting on a few rocks nearby, they were beautiful and as you can see, not at all camera shy.

Once the tour guide had managed to regain our attention from the Puffins, she handed out sticks with little flags on the end, which we were advised to wave over our heads to ward of attacks from the Arctic Turns that were flying over head as we toured the rest of the Island.

I have to say that this was rather a surprise as I don't recall reading a warning about being dive bombed by birds in the shore excursion guide.  Would it have changed my decision to go on this trip? Possibly, however, seeing the Puffins definitely made it worthwhile.  Though waving a stick over your head, isn't the easiest way of taking photos, so many of my pictures from this trip are a bit blurred.

Once we approached the farmhouse we were advised that we were now safe to return the sticks, before we headed into the farmhouse for tea, coffee and homemade cakes.

An explanation of how the Eider duck feathers collected here are cleaned and turned into Eiderdowns followed, before we sailed back to Isafjord.

Attractions

Isafjordur is a small town that can be easily covered on foot.  There are a couple of sights worth a particular visit, but in general the old town is lovely to just wonder around and explore.

  • The Old Hospital
This is now a library, and whilst we only popped inside for a couple of minutes the exterior of the building is definitely worth seeing.
  • Isafjordur Church
    Is an impressive modern building
  • Westfjords Maritime Museum
